Puri Has Country's First Wireless Surveillance

BHUBANESWAR: With lakhs of devotees expected to converge on Puri for Nabakalebara, security has been high on the agenda of the State Government. The state-of-the-art Command and Control centre inaugurated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in the Pilgrim town on Saturday may prove to be the just answer to effective crowd and security management.

The entire system has been developed in 80 days with convergence of technologies from across the globe. There are 230 CCTV security cameras covering 50 sq km of the town. The cameras have been installed at strategic locations in the Jagannath temple complex, apart from entry and exit points of all lanes culminating at the Grand Road. The command centre integrates CCTV footage, video streaming, Dial-100 calls along with online GIS mapping and GPS devices mounted on PCR vans which are equipped with CCTV cameras. The servers at the command centre are capable of storing data for one month.

The fully automated and wireless technology project has been devised and implemented by Schneider Electric while Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation Limited is the nodal agency. A review meeting held after trial run of the surveillance system was attended by Officer on Special Duty Soumendra Priyadarshi, Puri SP Asis Singh, senior police officials and vice-president, India and SAARC, Schneider Electric Shrinivas Chebbi.

The system is capable of counting footfall, identifying vehicles entering the town with their registration numbers and storing details on the servers. In another added advantage, the police personnel patrolling the streets of Puri have been provided with Tablets for receiving and disseminating critical information to and from the command centre. It is for the first time that 100 per cent wireless city surveillance system has been installed in any place in India, Chebbi said.

The system will be handy in locating medical emergency cases and rescuing victims immediately. A team of 120 personnel from Schneider Electric will be stationed in the town for training about 20 senior police officers in the technology.

“The role of intelligent analytics and advanced surveillance systems will empower Puri Police to monitor all critical entry and assembly points like bus stands, parking lots and railway station,” Chebbi added.
